And you see, when they first sent me out there, my aunt lived next to Oahu Prison.. This program will be rebroadcast on Wednesday, Nov 1, at 11:00 pm and Sunday, Nov.. And so, the combination, ‘cause I had never been off to the mainland before, knowing that some people that were already going there was a big influence.. org His son tell me that his dad worked hard And one of the most remarkable thing about this is that the son, he’s with the community college in Ewa right now, and he’s never gone back to the old house before.. His family’s century-old ranch named Kaonoulu, which means the good or plentiful breadfruit, is one of the few nearly intact ahupuaa left in Hawai‘i.. I wonder if your parents, after having seen you arrested by the military, and you would go back and do the same thing again, even though it wasn’t a terrible crime, they probably were afraid that you’d really run afoul of the military.. There was a Hawaiian gal, and her name escapes me right now, that was going to Colorado State University.. But anyway, they came back here and they were rice farmers, long time ago And then, they gave up rice and got a farm; pigs and cattle, chickens, ducks and things.. So that you would not wake up one day and say, Where’d all our assets go? We have three warehouses in Austin, three in Ontario, California, and a few others.. Then my grandfather, Pop Rice, purchased it from Colonel William Cornwell’s daughter, who was married to John Walker.. When I finally met his son, that’s when the son told me a little bit more about his father.. Planes all over the place And you know, for a youngster, I’d never seen anything like that.. He got ill here, and so, he and his wife stayed here, and consequently, never did get down permanently to the South Pacific.. You know, we shared things I tell you, the community came together and really helped out.. Meaning, their employees It’s a matter of how you’re brought up You know, as the saying goes, you ride for the brand.. Thanksgiving dinner; yes, gets up to forty-five, fifty sit-down dinner We have to do a little rearranging in the living room, but they get it done.. It was always horseback The office was out on a horse back The office was down in Wailuku, and we didn’t go there.. And I looked different And he was so scared And at the same time, he said, you know, with all the talk about the Japanese troops, and he thought I was one of them.. And of course, she cared for the four kids like her own, and then, of course, she had six.. You know, Where are you? Hoping that someday, you know, he would come back, and maybe an old man like me would come up and say, Hey, I’m Toshi.. He was a very influential person in my life So, he didn’t run for office, but he was appointed to office.. Oh, no, you were a mile away, so you couldn’t see it You could see it?Oh, in the inner side of the harbor, there were so many ships.. So, on December 20 th, I took him and all the grandkids, and sat them down, and told them the story.. Finally, my Aunt Mary said that I’d been playing around long enough, and I had to come home and work.. They knew who we were, and they could trust us They knew we were not enemies or anything.. You said that, as a kid? That’s right I tell you, I remember saying that And you know, maybe not exactly, you know, but basically that’s what it is.. He rode his own trail So, that’s a large legacy You know, that’s your grandfather.. You know, my parents were born here, but their parents were born in China And of course, my father at the younger age went back to China, and lived there for a short while.. As time marched on, and as Henry Rice and the third generation came of age, the family was faced with tough decisions.. But I was still at the bank, still enjoying my banking days there But, I kid everyone.. You know, we would jump in and play with the pigs, and things like that, because you know, that was what it was.. And then, it was over after a while A very short while, it was over There wasn’t any more planes in the sky anymore.. And so, you know, there was not a shot or anything like that fired my way I didn’t feel in danger at all.. So, we’re fifth generation And the family business was not being a missionary; that ended with that generation? How did ranching get into the family blood and property?Well, I would say, really, Pop Rice.. So, my cousin Charley King came on as a general partner, and my Aunt Mary came in as a general partner, and I was the managing general partner.. But she was a marvelous person; marvelous person And then, you rose to become an executive in Honolulu.. It’s really not for commercial type, it was just for home use Well, anyway, that’s what we had there in the little place called Kalauao.. And we had curfews And cows don’t believe in curfews You know, I remember taking the cow out of the bushes that one morning before curfew time, and you know, you’re walking through the bushes and you hear a noise.. And his father was a minister I think they footed everything, because my father could not do that.. And did you live in town? Yes; she lived in town, in the Chinatown area And your parents paid the freight for you to go to ʻ Iolani? Well, I think because my brother-in-law, you know, he was a photographer.. Then after college, we were weaned So, you rode alongside him, and worked alongside him in the office? There was no office.. You know, it was about three years that we had that But I’m gonna tell you, I think the one that scared the daylights out of me, and I still remember this.. Oh You know what happened And then, you know, finally you know, time went by so fast.. Especially accounting and business financing, and credit So, I did a lot of night schools.. But you see, my sister married an alumni from ʻIolani And through some maybe pull or recommendation, I was able to go to ʻIolani.. The Pi‘ilani Highway down in South Kihei was being built, and it was gonna be cutting off a portion of our makai ranchlands.. I first became in charge of the corporate banking division, then did that for about five or six years.. I mean, whenever we had spare time, we would do that And, you know, we had our pigs, and you know, our pigs were our pets.. You know, and so long, and goodbye At the time of our conversation just before the seventy-fifty anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack, Jimmy Lee was getting ready to mark his eighty-sixth birthday.. Aloha mai kakou I’m Leslie Wilcox James Hoy Sau Lee, better known as Jimmy, was raised on a farm in an area known as Kalauao.. That’s right; they were not Even though martial law ended three years later, Jimmy Lee stayed at ʻ Iolani, where he graduated and went on to the University of Hawai ʻ i at Manoa.. But don’t forget, the guy next to you is gonna make you good or not good And so, you just naturally take care, and they take care of you.. And of course, all of that, the explosions going You know, when I saw one of the ships on the other side of the island, the first one to get hit; wow, what is this? But again, always thought it was a game.. They were just great Jimmy Lee’s boundless energy continued to get him into trouble with the law.. You had connections, two generations, yourself and your daughter, with the family of Barack Obama.. How do you make that work?It can’t be all sweetness and light I tend to leave it to Sandy and Wendy.. Afterwards, then came down to Honolulu to go to school here Did you board? Yes; we boarded.. I would say that’s biggest thing I’ve seen You don’t have trouble letting go of things; right?Your banking career.. Next, on Long Story Short, Henry Rice Long Story Short with Leslie Wilcox is Hawai‘i’s first weekly television program produced and broadcast in high definition.. So, I was just seeing all of those things, the torpedo planes being blown out of the sky, the explosions.. And then, on to Fort Collins, Colorado at Colorado State University Why did you go to Colorado State? Well, number one, I had a very good scholarship to go there.. Throughout much of Jimmy’s life, there was a mystery that he kept trying to solve.. I grew up in our family home in Makawao, which is a home above Makawao The ranch had a few hundred acres in Makawao there, so it was where the horses were all kept.. The rough stuff You know, and of course, the sisters were there to help my mother, you know, whatever.. And I, for one, was scared of the military But at the same time, we were very happy; we felt safe with them.. His grandfather purchased Kaonoulu Ranch a century ago, and with roughly 10,000 acres of land stretching from the top of Haleakala to Maui’s south shore, it remains one of the few nearly intact ahupua‘a left in Hawai‘i.. So, he was sort of apologizing to you Well, yes, in a way And I said, but you know, they’re small, but they’re not that small.. Did they knock that rascal spirit right out of you? It sure did, because again I say, martial law was still there.. That was a lot of fun And then, ride all the way back As a teenager, Henry Rice traded in his daily life of horseback riding in open spaces for city life on Oahu.. But it was finally announced that, Hey, we’re at war Through loudspeakers or something; We’re at war, we’re being bombed by the Japanese, the Japanese troops have landed.. And the whole perimeter of Pearl Harbor used to have that But that’s what it amounts to.. So, we moved in 1960 to Moloka‘i, where I was employed by Moloka‘i Ranch And we were five years on Moloka‘i.. And then, the other most exciting, as I mentioned, was the Nevada I didn’t know that was the Nevada, but that was a ship coming in, burning and smoking.. I’m number six in that family Birth order is important; right? What does that mean your responsibilities were? Well, me and my brothers, you know, we had to take care of more or less the animals.. I mean, they were maybe about half mile away We were all friends, but you know, that’s what it is; just local rural area.. And he did not like politics, per se His integrity and character was something that I always admired.. But he was a very modest man, and he was very much below the radar in that aspect.. You know, at one time, he was head of the Maui Police Commission At one time, he was head of the Maui Water Department, which was at that time autonomous to the county government.. Listen to songs from the album Since the Last Time, including ’Since the Last Time’, ’Miracles’, ’How Far Is Heaven?’ , and many more.. So, they kinda bend backwards a little bit for us And you know, for myself, I really liked the soldiers after a while.. I presume your banking background, you were a banker for twenty-five years That must have informed what happened to how you could support this wonderful land, where renting couldn’t do it.. But we were a bunch of rascals and did a lot of things When I was eight years old, I broke my leg.. My parents were very strict You had to stay home and do your work; feed the pigs, and you know.. They just happened to be camping right next to you, too Yes; right next You see, at one time, they used to have what we call barrage balloons, you know, up in the sky with cables dangling on it to prevent, to deter Japanese planes from diving, you know, from dive bombing.. And that’s the beauty of growing up on the ranch, was the ability to work side-by-side with your father every summer as a small child, growing up to when I went away to college.. So he, together with another person, Wilson Cannon, talked me into going down to the bank.. And that in Hawaii, it is very important to have good stewardship of your lands, that lands in Hawaii should never been taken for granted, and that you’re responsible for good stewardship.. And mahalo to you, for joining us For PBS Hawai ʻ i and Long Story Short, I’m Leslie Wilcox.. And the kids, ages nine to fourteen, all wanted to hear the story about what it is.. What did the paniolos you worked with teach you about life?Lots of Hawaiian families have grown up on your ranch.. Jimmy Lee was only 11 years old on December 7, 1941, the day Pearl Harbor was attacked.. And because there was fear; from then on, it was fear And so, you know, this is really something, you know, for a young kid just changing like that with all this.. My grandmother’s side, which was the Baldwin side, they came here as a doctor.. And it was there on Maui that he met his bride, Charlotte Baldwin, who was Henry P.. But that never did happen And when I spoke about him over the radio on December 7, 2012, that’s when his son called and said, You’re talking about my dad.. Not knowing what it was But it was impressive, you know, for a young kid But let me tell you, from that moment on, when we were told that this was war, that’s it.. Without it, I wouldn’t have been able to bring the ranch to its financial stability that it is now.. And then, when one of the older brothers was born, she died Through some way, you know, they met my mother, and they got married.. And let me tell you, when that happened, that’s when fear came in Oh, it was not fun anymore.. Over the last few years, Henry Rice has slowly handed over the reins of Kaonoulu Ranch to the fourth generation.. Henry Rice is a direct descendant from a missionary family Well, I think it goes back to they came here in about 1840, 1841.. He was outside, feeding his family’s pigs, when he heard the planes overhead He watched from less than a mile away, as they dropped their bombs on ships in Pearl Harbor.. And so, this is what it is, so we were scared of them You know, these young soldiers, things like that.. In fact, I think I still have a couple of scars on my back from her She was known as a very strong woman.. But I tell you, one of the things I had to do was just that I had to stand over the grave, and that was him.. You know, the Hawaiians, the Puerto Ricans one side; the Hawaiians, the Filipinos on this side.. After a stint as a banking executive in Honolulu, he returned to Maui and his paniolo origins, and continues to honor the traditions passed down to him.. And curious as I was, I ran down to the railroad track and boy, I tell you, I never saw so much.. My life, I thought, I changed It was not fun anymore And I think this is when I got to be a little bit—I think I grew up overnight.. My wife and my daughter I try to stay out of the loop as much as possible But, you know, we live in the ranch house, the old ranch house where my grandfather lived.. So, we went home to get more supplies and everything We went there, no more planes, the attack was over.. Even though you were majoring in animal husbandry? Which you already knew a lot about.. Always outdoors; nighttime too, campfires? I think our best camping trips were during the summers, where we would get on our horses with my mother and father, and family, and packhorses and ride a whole day around the Island of Maui to an area called Waipai, and spend about five days over there, hunting goats and fishing.. It was at that time that we made the decision, Okay, let’s entitle the lands below the Pi‘ilani Highway.. We do; we do And Thanksgiving, even Easter, but not as big But Christmas Day, families from all over come to the ranch.. You know, and they were real nice to us And you know, that’s what it amounts to.. Like in any business, whether you’re in very nice brick and mortar, it’s still the people that make the business a success or not.. Just upland of Pearl Harbor’s east loch, Kalauao was famous in ancient times for its freshwater springs and fishponds.. But you know, what’s happening to this?Everything was there, not in front of me.. They probably never had taken care of pigs or anything That’s right; they never did.. Baldwin’s daughter And they got married there on Maui, and lived on Maui Our ranch is probably one of the last ahupua‘as on the island, running from the top of Haleākala Crater down to the beach.. This program will be rebroadcast on Wednesday, May 10, at 11:00 pm and Sunday, May 14, at 4:00 pm.. Buy the album for $9 99 Never experienced, and it was not fun anymore Jimmy Lee was eleven years old on December 7, 1941, the day Pearl Harbor was attacked.. And sitting on the seawall, I was able to point out where their grandpa and I played, in the trap where we used to catch fish.. And in our yard, I had two horses, Nellie and Kamehameha, that I rode all the time.. We got ourselves together, and said, You know, those lands are gonna become valuable.. I think very early on, growing up on the ranch, and especially as we got into college and came back during the summers, it became very important in my father’s eyes, and I really thank him for this, that we get weaned and go out and find out own way, and gain some experience at other ranches.. A direct descendant of a missionary family, Henry Rice’s roots run deep in upcountry Maui.. I didn’t realize we could even do that, but you know, we had to dig bomb shelters.. And they were always saying, We’re keeping you close to the prison because you’re gonna end up in there.. You know, and he was allowed to work, and things like that But you know, one of the things about this for myself, you know, when it started like that, it was not only you know, the feeling, of witnessing the attack, but I lost my friend, my best friend.. I asked him, Where is your father? Buried in Kaneohe So, on December 14 th, I went out searching for the grave, and I finally did, sure enough.. That, followed with a lot of good fun In addition to laborious duties on the family ranch, Henry Rice did make time for fun, and took advantage of the open country on Maui.. What was your father like? Did he also live large? He was very much under the radar; very much under the radar.. I think they hid it in the garbage But we ate lot of chicken and lot of steak But we were friends.. Well, I can say it really changed Well, not for that very moment Because it was so exciting when everything was happening that it was fun.. And you know, a soldier met me with a bayonet Sticking at my throat Boy, I tell you.. Going back further, it was under King Kamehameha IV It was this huge tract of land from mountain to ocean was given to, or deeded to a Hawaiian.. Everybody has wondered about that Headed the ranch and the lands before you did? He was a very large person, with a very large voice.. But none of those shrapnel, those shells ever fell on us, either And that was really a show. e10c415e6f

But none of those shrapnel, those shells ever fell on us, either And that was really a show. e10c415e6f
